ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces estimating, scheduling, and project controls which are the major topics in construction project management. Project cost estimates may be prepared either by the project manager and project engineers or by staff estimators from the estimating department of the construction firm. Project engineers will not have as much of a role in planning as they will in scheduling but should welcome the opportunity to become involved in development of the project plan whenever it is offered. The setting up of a document control system that is appropriate for the given project is one of the most important tasks for the project manager and project engineer during project start-up. This system will allow the project team to accurately track down and document success in safety, cost, time, and quality. An as-built estimate, as well as an as-built schedule, is an important historical tool that experienced contractors utilize to successfully procure future construction projects.
