ABSTRACT

In this chapter we review progress towards overcoming age discrimination against older workers in the labour market. The first part is concerned with changing demography and patterns of labour market participation among those aged 50 and over. Government and employer policies towards older workers are subsequently reviewed and the significance of the introduction of more ‘inclusive’ policies towards older workers among some employers and by policy makers is evaluated. We also identify what can be learned from approaches to the ageing of the workforce in other countries. Finally, we critically examine the state of knowledge in this area and identify new avenues for research. In the first instance, the historical context to the discussion is provided.
