ABSTRACT

Reflecting upon the sustainability of HE massification, the authors raise the fundamental questions about sustainable development "for what" and "for whose interests". For the development of young people, education plays an important role in promoting their life chances. To achieve the sustainable higher education (HE) development amid the HE expansion, people would expect educational opportunities are distributed more equally among students, teaching and learning quality is ensured, and graduates' employability is enhanced. In a broader view, sustainable development of HE does not just contribute to the sustainability in knowledge production and economic development, but more about its contributions to the sustainable development of the society and the enhancement of human well-being. Thus, with a better understanding, the recent development of HE in Asia-Pacific policy makers, scholars and practitioners, as well as citizens, could be better equipped to achieve the sustainable development of HE.
