ABSTRACT

Sustainability is one of those concepts that has developed sufficient familiarity in everyday discourse that when people hear it, they automatically assign it a meaning and sensibility, one drawn from its place within their own accustomed linguistic structures. As such, it has great utility in allowing people to "speak across" many differences of context with a sense that they share a familiar meaning with others utilizing the concept. This chapter seeks to engage in an effort at "concept clarification" with the notion of sustainability, at the conclusion of which the author attempts to attach it to notions of resilience. It considers briefly five different notions of what sustainability might mean in a higher education (HE) context. It examines the relationship between the various meanings of sustainability and resilience within HE environments. The chapter suggests three overall strategies that can assist HEIs in developing a resilience-based approach to training and education.
