ABSTRACT

Given the difficulties John Petts faced at Llanystumdwy it was hardly surprising that production ceased altogether on Against Women during the winter of 1950-1951, much to Sandford's exasperation. After Petts took up his new post with the Arts Council he hoped he could continue engraving in his spare time; it soon became apparent, however, that this was an unrealistic expectation. He also organized exhibitions including the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of David Jones in 1954, which toured Wales before being shown at the Royal Scottish Academy and finally the Tate Gallery in London. In 1956 he arranged an exhibition at the Welsh Folk Museum in St Fagan's of the collection of Hendrik Wiegersma, the specialist consultant, draughtsman and collector he had met in Holland in February 1945. By 1960 Petts had resigned his lectureship at Carmarthen and was a freelance designer of stained glass.
