ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on parent involvement and conferences, and suggests that educators should implement parent-education programs designed to acquaint families of culturally different backgrounds with US school systems. The parent involvement has a positive effect on student achievement and overall school progress is undeniable. Regardless of racial background and SES, the most powerful factor for students' school achievement is the extent to which the family or caregiver provides a safe and happy home environment to support their optimal growth and learning. Family support enhances learning, and schools should ensure that parents have the information needed to properly guide and interact with their children in a rich family learning environment. Home visits may be one of the most effective ways for teachers to get to know learners, their immediate and extended families, and their home environment and culture. Educators in multicultural situations must recognize that some communication behaviors are to be understood rather than expected.
