ABSTRACT

Human civilizations have flourished on the banks of the rivers, water being the single most important source of sustenance and survival. Indeed the first trace of life owed its origins to water. In Sanskrit language, the term "Jeevan" stands for life as well as water. Thus life and water are interchangeable. The life giving, life sustaining and life supporting quality of water hardly needs to be emphasized. Rise or fall, development or decay of civilizations have revolved around the availability or scarcity of water.
