ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the analysis of the state of the art and the development potential of the media cluster in the city of Leipzig. A broad perspective is taken: not only the printing and publishing sectors are considered, but also the audiovisual media, as well as new digital media and the Leipzig Fair. The chapter describes the development and structure of the economy of the city of Leipzig, as Leipzig's media industry should not be studied in isolation but embedded in the local urban economy. It explores some brief developments in the media and communications industry in general and presents the principal players in the media cluster in Leipzig, consisting of firms, education and research institutes, as well as local and regional governments. The chapter analyses the dynamics of the cluster and also describes strategic relations between the several actors in the cluster, and the subject of new firms creation.
