ABSTRACT

Satellite communication, supersonic travel, fax machines, the Internet, and abundant international trade–both economic and cultural–have made long distances insignificant in some ways. One interesting consequence of global communication is that families begin to realize increasingly how diverse families are, and they begin to identify the ways in which they are like and different from others. One interesting consequence of global communication is that families begin to realize increasingly how diverse families are, and they begin to identify the ways in which they are like and different from others. Many studies have demonstrated the power of parents in the communication of values to children. And very often the impact of the environment on the child is only one consideration for families who are choosing a living environment, if it is considered at all. In some cultures it is difficult to differentiate between individual parent influences and community influences.
