ABSTRACT

As students share an increasing burden of the cost of higher education, they are playing a greater role as stakeholders in the process and outcomes of quality assurance arrangements. This dynamic leads to students being involved in quality assurance processes and reviews within and beyond institutions. However, this also entails embedding what matters to students into the structures of assurance mechanisms. This chapter explores findings from research on student perceptions and expectations of higher education – how students view the purpose of higher education, the role of their course and the institution. It also covers student engagement in quality assurance and enhancement, highlighting innovative practices across a number of countries.
