ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza’s historiographical perspectives and methods, isolating and analysing its defining moments. It describes Schussler Fiorenza’s paradigm for historical reconstruction with a view to investigating fruitful shapes for feminist historiographical theory to take. The chapter discusses initially locate the context of feminist historiography and discusses more thoroughly Schussler Fiorenza’s methodological theories. It deals with the historiographical paradigm in which she locates her historical-critical methods. Schussler Fiorenza’s classic historical work on the New Testament is In Memory of Her. The interconnections between Schussler Fiorenza’s work and the women’s history movement are obvious. Schussler Fiorenza completely rejects the notion of dispassionate historical inquiry. Historiography outside of biblical studies and theology mirrors the retreat from belief in impartial truth evident in Schussler Fiorenza’s work. Schussler Fiorenza herself declares that her method is a particularization of the results of historical criticism.
