ABSTRACT

The international situation and its development trend, as well as the changes in China, all remind us that Chinese researchers of international studies should meet the requirement of the new period and situation, and strive to develop a non-interference theory both with Chinese characteristics and in conformity with international trends. This chapter looks at the background China put forward for the non-interference principle and its original meaning. On June 28 of the same year, the Prime Ministers of China and India issued a joint statement, pointing out: China and India recently had reached an agreement, which set out some principles to guide relations between the two countries. These principles are: mutual respect for territorial sovereignty; non-aggression; noninterference in each other's internal affairs; equality and mutual benefit; peaceful coexistence. The principles of democracy and equality should be promoted and fulfilled in international relations. Fundamentally, the principle is also consistent with the sovereign nation-state structure of the international system.
