ABSTRACT

Income-smoothing Income-smoothing attempts to make an entity’s profit performance seem less volatile than it ‘really’ is. When the focus is on profit rather than financial position, excessive ‘prudence’ can be almost as dangerous as excessive imprudence. In the extreme it can mislead shareholders (and others), by failing to disclose poor current performance through drawing secretly on hidden reserves established in previous periods.
