ABSTRACT

This chapter explains a number of aims which include telling the story of changes in selected peripheral Fijian village communities; a comparative study of rural sites for a number of time periods. It explores the extent to which agrarian transition has taken place on the island and its villages. The chapter contribute to the research literature studying transformations in rural spaces in developing countries in general, and in Fiji specifically. It deals with the different points of view concerning the changes that were expressed by the local villagers and by officeholders on Kadavu and outside Kadavu. The chapter reviews the changes experienced by the village communities and the island, and explores the effect of development courses on current lives and relationships. It also highlights whether revisiting, and the results of the research, enable the author to redefine agrarian change and to generalise the underlying processes that operate towards creating a new platform for local and regional development.
