ABSTRACT

The Anglo-French Condominium colony was fast moving towards independence as the Republic of Vanuatu. In 1978, Tanna's population was about 15,000 and it has more than doubled since that year, just as Vanuatu's population has increased from 110,000 to nearly 275,000 in 2017. On Tanna, multipersonal research has accompanied multitemporal. Patterson and others in Taylor and Thieberger provide additional accounts of multitemporal fieldwork in Vanuatu. The pre-paid mobile phone service Digicel set up services in Vanuatu in 2008, spreading towers across the islands, one of which tops Nukwaneinupum, the prominent hill above Samaria. Many Internet users also engage in Vanuatu-focused Facebook pages and groups where they share comment on events, urban life, and politics. Global discourses of responsible individuals, and transformational economic and political development, in certain years have powerfully infiltrated island awareness, alongside lineal, progressive time concepts.
