ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by presenting the learning objectives, the meaning of diversity in the workforce/workforce diversity, diversity, human diversity, and a definition of what workforce diversity is not. The presence of diversity in the workforce does not suggest that there is a lack of professional standards and productivity in the workforce because qualified minorities and women are represented at all levels of the organization. To provide a clearer understanding of what diversity in the workforce in the United States symbolizes, the chapter describes workforce diversity as a voluntary strategy used by organizations that value human diversity and are committed to hiring the best and brightest qualified individuals representing a variety of diversity backgrounds. The Philadelphia Order was named after the city of Philadelphia because it was identified by the United States government as a belligerent offender against the equal opportunity regulations for being intimidating and unwilling to hire qualified African Americans and other minorities.
