ABSTRACT

It is a beautiful mechanism, the language of blame and praise, of responsibility, of valid and invalid excuses. Expectations that are based on our folk psychology have a normative character that can be explained in terms of entitlements and obligations. 'Accountability' is a property that we have no choice but to attribute to each other in attempts at humaning, in our attempts to live together with each other. The expert witness does not ascertain anything; he lets us know that it is a waste of our time, energy and attention to allow his client to play along with us at this moment. It is like in your childhood playground, when you sometimes did not want a child to join in because he would ruin the game. It was very harsh. But besides being harsh, it may also be mean if one is trying to hide behind a two-way mirror that people have determined in a fair, unbiased, impartial and objective manner.
