ABSTRACT

I enjoyed writing this book enormously. The intensity of this project led to hours of total concentration, to days rolling into one when the deadline came nearer, to dreams at night about passages in which I got lost, to walks to help me organise my thoughts, to frustratingly rearranging paragraphs that would not flow, to a garden that has been neglected, to images that suddenly presented themselves to me, to surprisingly lucid reasoning that looked at me benignly from the computer screen, to words that made my face light up in agreement and satisfaction – all of these were experiences that I enjoyed immensely, and that made writing this book a delightful occupation.
