ABSTRACT

People are talking animals, zoon logikon; this is something that the ancient Greeks already knew. People comment on their own behaviour, and explain the intentions of what they do. People want their behaviour to be understandable, for themselves and for others. People want what they do to be part of a story that one can follow. People live in scenarios, in situations in which something is going on, in which one thing logically follows from another. If people do something in a particular situation, if they act, they are responsible for a specific sequence of events. Efficiency, as a sign of instrumental rationality, has been a typical feature of human existence since the days of Aristotle. The most interesting aspect of efficiency as a quality criterion for humaning is the role it plays in our interpretation of understandability. The general idea about how people of good will do their humaning, is a self-evident fact, and it is present on Endoxa.
