ABSTRACT

Confidence, independence and resilience make an enormous difference to pupils' academic progress, and to their wellbeing and opportunities long term. Teachers can develop these skills, mindsets and habits through their classroom culture, dialogue, relationships, routines and instruction. Assessment is critical for both understanding and accelerating impact in this area. The greater the pupil involvement in the assessment process, the more powerful it becomes. There is plenty of evidence to say that confidence, independence and resilience matter for pupils, but less evidence describing how best to develop them in the classroom, or how to evaluate progress. This chapter presents an overview of the other key concepts discussed in this book. The book presents framework of pupil outcomes and success criteria. It discusses the overall approach to the area, including a flowchart of teacher actions, in Developing confidence, independence and resilience in the classroom. The book describes the value of Learning from other phases and subjects.
