ABSTRACT

Human beings are often burdened by the enduring fantasy of what life could or should have been. Emotions are governed by thoughts, but thoughts, beliefs and assumptions can be challenged and changed for the purpose of improving one's psychological wellbeing and resilience. Children vary in their temperament and sensitivity towards their parents and the environment that influences them. But clearly boarding was a traumatic experience for many of us because our separation from parents coincided with key developmental stages at ages five, eight or as adolescents. Our struggle with adversity and the manner in which we chose to cope with it, helped us develop skills useful in successfully negotiating a variety of challenges faced in our adult lives. The lives we chose to live after the revolution and the careers we later pursued were in part influenced by what we inherited from our boarding school education.
