ABSTRACT

The resistance to flood and debris loading is a critical parameter affecting the design of bridges under flood loading. For instance, bridges partially or completely immersed into water in extreme flood will result in very notable hydrodynamic loads on decks and piers. Based on previous studies on the nature of the pressure resulted from the water flow on the structure, we herein investigate the performance of pier under raising intensity of flood using finite element analysis. In addition, we evaluate the effect of bed fixity and the different damage levels of the pier. Furthermore, the probability of the damage in various levels of flood loading is also summarized and analyzed, which will be helpful for enhancing the resilience of the road infrastructures.
