ABSTRACT

Bullying is not a phenomenon limited by age. Although there has been an emphasis on exploring the concept in relation to school-aged children, studies examining adult bullying in the workplace inform us that such conduct transcends the context of youth. Research examining the incidence of cyberbullying in an Australian university context is in its infancy, however, and – as such – published studies are not generalizable. Participants self-selected to complete an online survey. This survey was distributed through a research panel provider to an enlisted group of student volunteers: randomly selected from a sample of its registered members, as drawn from various Australian universities. Most respondents were not aware of any criminal laws regulating cyberbullying (61.8%). The majority of participants (57.1%) had no knowledge of a behaviour code or university policy that addresses cyberbullying. It is encouraging that most respondents (62%) indicated they would seek help from a post-secondary institution counselling service if necessary.
