ABSTRACT

In France, as in many countries, concern about cyberbullying has become a societal issue. Recently in France, more scholarly attention has been given to cyberviolence and cyberbullying. In this chapter, the authors present the findings from two research studies: a written questionnaire survey that was completed at two universities in the South and East of France, and a qualitative study involving face-to-face student interviews completed in the South of France. The first study aimed to assess the involvement of higher education students in acts of cyberviolence as victims and aggressors, the consequences of victimization, and subsequent coping strategies. They followed a convenience sampling strategy, and students were asked if they wished to participate. For the second study, the authors interviewed 20 students, aged 18–26. The students were approached to participate because they had declared on the survey that they were either victims or witnesses to cyberviolence, and had indicated that they were willing to take part in face-to-face interviews.
