ABSTRACT

This chapter explores emergent shift towards information-based employment and the development of self-employment and small businesses. It examines the debates surrounding the development of new business activities in rural and non-metropolitan spaces. The chapter focuses on research which has been undertaken into self-employed teleworking in a general and rural context. As for home working, telework facilitates many opportunities, particularly for those restricted to, or who wish to, work at home. The chapter demonstrates that there has been little research into rural teleworking, particularly from the perspective of individuals undertaking these new work practices in the countryside. Furthermore, it is evident that research into telework more generally has tended to be largely aspatial, failing to consider the possible location of telework and ignoring other spatial aspects of the nature and development of telework.
