ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to redress the deficiency through an exploration of the degree to which they are facilitating the link between the supply of, and demand for, telework, such as between those individuals wishing to telework and organisations wanting to use teleworkers. It explores the characteristics of rural telework and assesses the extent to which telework facilitation policy is influencing its development in rural areas. The chapter also explores the characteristics of telecottages, which have been a result of telework facilitation policy, and their role in facilitating telework across the UK and Ireland. It shows that the telecottage is a recent phenomenon with the greatest established in the 1990s. The chapter clearly demonstrates that telecottages are having a minimal impact on the development of teleworking in rural areas. It was evident that telecottages were not important arenas for the day-to-day operations of teleworkers generally.
