ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the individual motivations behind self-employed teleworking in the study areas and explores the background to the establishment of teleworking businesses and the extent to which decisions behind telework have been influenced by a desire for self-employment, to work at home, to live in the countryside or combinations of these motives. Fifty of the 52 teleworkers had established businesses in a sector identical to that of their previous employment, suggesting that this employment had played an important part in determining the nature of the teleworking businesses. In most cases, individual motivations to telework in the countryside did not come down to one sole reason, but to a combination of economic considerations, lifestyle and workstyle preferences, prompted by previous experiences and personal and employment histories.
