ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the characteristics and dynamics of telework and explores some issues by focusing on the characteristics of the teleworkers' clients; the methods by which teleworkers secure work. It communicates with clients; the external perceptions of teleworkers; and the extent to which telecottages are a part of the teleworking situation. Despite the much use of remote communications by teleworkers, the interviews revealed that most still found it necessary to interact with clients on a face to face basis. For the majority of teleworkers, the development of new clients was dependent upon the growth and renewal of specialist expertise and reputations, focused on expanding markets through the evolution of client contacts. The chapter focuses on the characteristics and dynamics of telework in the study areas, particularly in relation to the location of clients and methods of communicating and securing work.
