ABSTRACT

In the sermons and writings of most of the Caroline Divines, doctrine, the worship of the Church and the morality required of Christians, are inextricably interwoven. There seems to be no concept of Christian Ethics or Moral Theology being in a department of its own, as though it could be arrived at and studied and practised in isolation from all other considerations of the Christian faith. Order is expressed, as man's 'Amen' to God's decree of order, in all Christian activity, in the intellectual field, in matters of behaviour and conduct, and in worship. The main objective of uniformity was to set out the unchangeable truth and the order expressed in that. Preaching follows the pattern of the Incarnation, and points to that Incarnate Christ, who is the Scope of all preaching. Preaching itself, as a sacramental institution, gathers round that Sacrament of Godliness which is the manifesting of the Word in the Flesh.
