ABSTRACT

The rise and development of Hick's pluralist philosophy of religions must be viewed against the background of his earlier theological and philosophical commitments. This chapter will begin with a theo-biographical sketch of Hick's pilgrimage. This will be followed by a detailed tracing of Hick's theological and philosophical development up to the eve of his move to the pluralist paradigm in the early 1970s. In both this and the following chapters, Christological soundings will be taken along the way in order to highlight the theological ramifications of Hick's developing thought.
