ABSTRACT

The year 1990 was a milestone for the School of Urban and Regional Planning, one of the academic units in the Graduate School of the University of the Philippines (UP), the country’s premier University. It marked its twenty-fifth anniversary since it was by the legislative fiat in 1965. Republic Act 4341 passed by the Philippine Congress authorised the University of the Philippines to create the first planning school in the country, entrusted with capability building, and, developed a cadre of planning professionals to assist in solving the then worsening development problems of the country. As of August 1994, there were close to 450 graduates. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is expected that 2,000 planning trainees will make their commitment to a better planned environment.
