ABSTRACT

The Pleasures of Limestone in some limestone formations of valuable metallic ores that the water deposits. Iron, lead and zinc ores have been deposited in this way. Carboniferous limestone was the foundation upon which coal was laid down; and since iron is also found in these strata, the site of many iron and steel-making centres has been due to the presence of the three essential ingredients, iron ore, coal and limestone for flux. Lime, calcium oxide, is made by burning limestone. I t is essential to the preparation of potash and soda, which are basic ingredients of many manufacturing processes. Lime-and this concerns us more directly-is also the basis of mortar, plaster and cement. Plaster has always been used as a dressing to limestone buildings, particularly to interiors. Its use was extended to brick and to every kind of building material. But, stylistically, it became in essence the adjunct of classical architecture, the limestone architecture par excellence.1
