ABSTRACT

A Geological Medley fracture, unlike that of quartz or flint particularly,1 is regular. This advantage, added to its medium hardness, and added to the 'breathing5 quality of its light, has been, I am convinced, a chief determinant of naturalistic styles. Moreover, in the hands of Quattro Cento artists, the loss of the link with its organic structure and origin, allowed the sculptor greater freedom to re-create from such coherent mass, precise, imaginative and humanistic forms of sea-life and land-life.
