ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes quangocratization in the Netherlands. It has moved beyond the case studies done so far by developing a theoretical framework to explain the causes and consequences of quangocratization, and by using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. More theory development and research are necessary, however, and several recommendations have been made to that end. The book demonstrates that quangocratization is caused mainly by imitation, or repetition of decisions by politicians. The motives of politicians for their choice of quangos (that is the practitioner theory) are not substantiated. Perhaps the political efficiency of establishing quangos is more important to politicians than the economic efficiency. The book discusses the implications from the findings for both the practitioner theory and the theoretical model developed.
