ABSTRACT

The last two chapters were based on the data on wage and price trends collected by the ILO from their regional offices, and published in their Yearbook of Labor Statistics. The ILO series do not include information on trends in output (value added) or in employment from the same sample of firms which provide the data on wages. This gap is filled by the data set maintained by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), which also provides information for a much larger sample of countries than is available in the ILO data analyzed in Chapter 4. In this chapter we start with a descriptive account of the trends in wages and other relevant variables as revealed by the statistics collected by the UNIDO. The sources of the data are the censuses and/or sample surveys of manufacturing establishments in the relevant countries. They are usually collected from establishments registered with the Statistical Offices of the national governments. The coverage of the data sets is therefore limited to registered establishments or the manufacturing units in the formal sector. Time series data are generally available from the seventies with some missing values, mainly for the more recent years for particular countries.
