ABSTRACT

We have approached the problems to be encountered by the professional worker who intervenes from the position of a personal or institutional mandate. We have charted the strategy to be adopted when the group is powerless and where there is no clear view of how the predicament can be improved. The hybrid model will now be used to demonstrate how the professional role can be shaped by the 'client' constituency in a more purposeful manner. Here, the professional will be described in a mercenary capacity, as the employee of the community. Nevertheless, many of the considerations remain the same as in the earlier example, but there are fresh, and more taxing responsibilities to be taken on board. If the professional is to retain personal integrity, and remain 'in charge' of the process, while at the some time being at the mercy of the employer for salary and orders, a great deal of personal accomplishment will be required. Some of the value assumptions implicit in this statement will also be examined.
