ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies some critical environmental issues in Swaziland, which constrain sustainable development. Water quality in Swaziland is mainly affected by three activities namely crop production, manufacturing industries, and processing plants. The chapter focuses on the implications for policy, institutional arrangements, and capacity building, all of which are significant elements of sustainable development. It also focuses on issues of population dynamics, land tenure, soil erosion and water, only because it is not possible to raise all the environmental issues within available space and time. In the light of these issues, there are various elements of environmental management that have to be reviewed, strengthened or initiated. Some of the components include institution building, environmental policy development, and environmental legislation and enforcement; together with relevant education, training and information dissemination. Sustainable development requires a merger of environment and development in decision making.
