ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the philosophy, goals and policies of the present system of education in Swaziland. It explores the problems pervading the present system of education. The chapter proposes policy reforms which the authors believe could facilitate the achievement of the goals of education for development in the next century. Swaziland's philosophy of education is based on the principle that every Swazi child and citizen has an inalienable right to education. The overall goal of education in Swaziland is to provide all Swazi citizens with an education which is appropriate to their needs and abilities, while at the same time addressing the country's developmental requirements. The problems pervading the present system of education in Swaziland include, among others, lack of adequate human, material and financial resources; inefficiency in the education system; and poor quality of education. The disparity between urban and rural schools is another serious obstacle to attaining the vision of education for development in the twenty-first century.
