ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to demonstrate through a specific case study the limitations of managerialism and the necessity of collegialism in assuring quality, it should not be assumed that we uncritically endorse collegialism. The case study reported here results from a HEFCE Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning project, Assessment Strategies and Standards in Sociology. Sociology is a complex and diverse subject, it is not possible to prescribe one kind of sociological investigation as appropriate for all dissertations. The sociology dissertation obliges students to draw upon both sociological theory and sociological methods to explore a particular topic. Collegialism and managerialism constitute ideal types. No university or college has ever been characterised by either collegialism or managerialism in their pure forms. Nonetheless collegialism and managerialism can be characterised as extreme poles of a continuum and institutions can be located at different points on the continuum.
