ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how knowledge and the display of knowledge are situated products of interactional and conversational work. The display of 'know-how' and knowledge is of fundamental theoretic import to conceptualisations of 'effective multidisciplinary teamwork'. The chapter focuses how the display of categories in 'utterances' is heard as 'knowledgeable' in terms of the local management of talk deployed during the course of a meeting. It explores the methods through which various accounts are interactionally recognised as knowledgeable. The chapter also explores the precise recognition work that team members use during the course of some instances of the meetings examined during the study. It discusses the manner through which utterrances are interactionally recognised as knowledgeable and also provides an instance of talk in interaction within which the knowledgeable status of utterances is an overt and contested topic for members of the flood support team.
