ABSTRACT
Crime rates are coming down in numerous respects across the United States and among all the racial and ethnic groups. If the main source of income for black females according to popular perception is the welfare cheque, the main source of income for black males in the minds of many is crime. A national survey in 1990 showed that over half of non-black people questioned thought African Americans were more violent than whites, and that African American men were especially dangerous. Statistics about the state of health of African Americans are about as disquieting as those pertaining to crime. There are some illnesses that other minority groups suffer more than African Americans, but as the biggest non-white group and the one with the highest death rates from most diseases blacks arouse the greatest amount of concern. There is relatively little controversy in connection with sport, at least in terms of media presentation.
