ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different types of integrity such as professional integrity, political integrity, intellectual integrity and artistic integrity abound in everyday conversation and the media, as well as in the philosophical literature on integrity. There may be conflict between types of integrity. The most obvious example of such conflict is one between professional integrity and personal integrity –for instance, where maintaining work commitments makes it difficult to maintain important personal relationships. Political integrity, with its strenuous and conflicting demands, provides a good example of a distinct type of professional integrity. To defeat political integrity, an act or trait must constitute a diminution of that integrity. Intellectual integrity is most in evidence where it is connected to personal and moral integrity. Artists can rise to meet threats to their artistic integrity in a way that not only enhances their integrity but also adds something important to their art.
