ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 poses the major question: how have digital communication technologies impacted congressional offices and the representational relationship? To answer this question, we examine congressional websites of members of Congress as the primary unit of analysis. In so doing, this work contributes to the literatures on representation and political communication. Our mixed methodological approach employs historical, theoretical, qualitative, and quantitative analysis to trace the evolution of communication technologies in Member offices, and their impact on office communication practices and the representational relationship. The introductory chapter concludes with a roadmap for the substantive chapters of the book.
