ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the values of a small number of teachers in secondary schools, and explores their values concerns in the light of recent curriculum developments. In 1988, a National Curriculum for England and Wales, was introduced by the education reform act (ERA). This Act introduced nine National Curriculum subjects for youngsters from five-14, with the addition of RE and, at 14, Modern foreign languages. This curriculum was subsequently updated in September 2000. ERAs intention was to determine subject matter and assessment for the school curriculum for all state educated pupils between the ages of five and 16. The research was designed to identify and explore the impact of motivational influences, values and practice on the secondary school teacher. Goodson's promotion of the 'teacher's voice' offered insight into the world of the teacher by assuming that the teacher was a complete human being, with emotions, friends, family and a life that wasn't completely bound and defined by school.
