ABSTRACT

This chapter unmasks globalization as imperialism and points out the limits of the antiglobalization movement. It discusses the ubiquitous search for an alternative form of development and globalization. The chapter argues that there is both more to and less than meets the eye in the movement on which the political Left has pinned its hopes and expectations. It describes the concept of 'imperialism' as a more useful tool for analyzing the dynamics of global developments and of the forces of resistance. The chapter addresses, and challenges, the mythical notion of a powerless state, undermined by a process of globalization. It then discusses the form that imperialism is taking in the current world context. The chapter examines the question of 'democracy' and its meaning for both the agents of imperialism and its opponents in the popular movement.
