ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two published books by Anton Pennauer. First book includes Willkommen und Abschied (Hail and Farewell) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and second book includes An die Leier (To my Lyre) Anacreon, and Im Haine (In the Wood) Franz von Bruchmann. Having just produced a set with German and English words, Franz Schubert decided to follow it with one containing German and Italian words. There are two possible reasons why the set was issued in two books. One is that the songs required more engraving than was usual for a three-song set, and to make a profit Pennhauer had to break the set up into two parts and charge the standard lower price of 1 florin, 30 kreuzer for each of them rather than the 2 florins he would have had to charge for a single book. Alternatively, or perhaps coincidentally, Schubert may have felt that, if the set were split in two, its structure might be clarified.
