ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses following four songs: Du liebst mich nicht (You love me not) August von Platen-Haller-munde, Dass sie hier gewesen (That she was here) Friedrich Riickert, Du bist die Ruh (You are repose) Friedrich Riickert, and Lachen und "Weinen (Laughter and tears) Friedrich Ruckert. Schubert came across the poetry of Platen and Ruckert through Franz von Bruchmann who had befriended the poets. Like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich von Schlegel, they took a deep interest in oriental verse. Ruckert's poems are equally strict, and apart from Du bist der Ruh they too make unusual use of a refrain. However, when he composed Du bist der Ruh Schubert added a musical refrain in that he set the last lines of stanzas 2, 4 and 5 to the same music. The main feature of the set is, therefore, the way different types of refrains are ordered.
