ABSTRACT

This chapter presents two songs to poems in Novels by Sir Walter Scott, published by Anton Diabelli and Co., 14 March 1828. The songs are: Lied der Anne Lyle and Gesang der Noma. This was published on the same day as Op. 86, a setting of Romanze des Richard Lowenherz from Scott's Ivanhoe. It is possible that the two works were intended to complement each other. The songs in Op. 85 are for women who are forced to keep their feelings secret, whereas Op. 86 is for a man who can speak of his exploits and his love openly. Schubert set the songs in German, and made no request to have them published with the English words as he had done with his other Scott set, Op. 52. The translator of Lied der Anne Lyle is unknown that of Gesang der Noma is S. H. Spiker. The pitch of the songs suggests that Schubert wrote them for mezzo-soprano or high contralto.
