ABSTRACT
This chapter presents four sets of songs: Heimliches Lieben; Das Weinen; Vor meiner Wiege and An Silvia. Franz Schubert had this set printed privately by his friend Franz von Schober to thank his hostess Marie Pachler for her hospitality and encouragement when he stayed with her in Graz in September 1827. His original intention was to begin and end the set with the two songs he had composed in her house, Heimliches Lieben and Eine altschottische Ballade, Herder's translation of the Scottish ballad Edward. According to Johann Jenger, who went with him to Graz, Eine altschottische Ballade was still included in the set when it was sent to the engravers in April 1828. At the last minute, however, Schubert substituted it with his setting of Shakespeare's To Sylvia. Schubert had to sacrifice this connection when he replaced Eine altscbottische Ballade with An Silvia. He wrote three versions of Eine altschottische Ballade.
