ABSTRACT

Hundreds of years ago, buildings were easy—no artificial lighting, no air-conditioning, maybe even no heating. But today's buildings must meet many requirements simultaneously, and for multiple occupants who all have different opinions about what is "right". We might like it warmer, or cooler, in the mornings, which could change from season-to-season, if we live in a part of the country where there are seasons. "Stuffiness" occurs when spaces are under-ventilated, and what it really means is that odors, gases, even particulates have built up in the air to such a degree that breathing is impaired. Ideally, buildings should be planned so that occupants are not exposed to direct sun for extended periods of time. Even though electric lights cannot produce (well, not given practical amounts of power) quantities of light that are comparable to the sun, it is still possible to create glare problems.
